When we replanted part of the vineyard in 2000, we took the opportunity to plan a few acres of Syrah. This is a varietal that we all enjoy consuming and that seemed like it would thrive on the east facing volcanic slopes of Sky Vineyards. The 2004 Sky Syrah is a wine that both reflects the Sky terroir, embodying many of the typical Sky characteristics, and also represents a foray into unchartered vineyards. Our one hectare of Syrah has all the muscular characteristics of a mountain red alongside the aromatics of a cooler climate wine. Aromas of bramble, blackberry and cassis are book-ended by complex floral (violet/lilac) peppercorn and Asian spice (cardamom/cumin) aromas. The texture is supple up front but delineated in its finish and structure, a wine that will provide solid long-term aging potential. The 2004 Syrah is a wine with a high altitude attitude with a definite nod to its northern Rhône brethren.
We are sold out of the 2004 Syrah.
